Is Technology an Alternative to Politics? A Conversation with Jaya Klara Brekke

In this wide-ranging conversation, Jaya Klara Brekke and Shumon Basar look back on Technology & Power, a series of discussions organised by Brekke for Ibraaz London, which gathered leading technologists, activists, and academics to map the increasing entanglement of emerging technologies with state and corporate power. Taking Brekke’s own research on decentralised technologies as its point of departure, this discussion considers the new systems of algorithmic control that are propping up today’s tech-authoritarian agenda and eroding forms of democratic governance. It also introduces the computer scientists, political campaigners, and artists who are reimagining and reenchanting our techno-pessimist present by using technology to build alternative social relations and forms of counterpower.
