The world overheard: A celebration of journalistic pluralism, language and the many voices beyond the Anglosphere

In an age when much of the Anglophone media flattens the world rather than celebrates its richness and diversity, Translator creates a space for something different. The magazine inverts the dominant model of English-language journalism by starting with what is already being written and spoken about in the world beyond English – in multiple languages, countries and media landscapes.

Issue #2 features even more translated journalism, reportage and essays from Palestine, Japan, Brazil, Belgium and beyond. The evening will bring together Translator editors Charles Emmerson, Trà My Hickin and Zanta Nkumane to introduce the issue and reflect on the process of curating reporting across linguistic and cultural borders. Joining by video, Karachi-based journalist Sanam Maher and New Delhi-based photographer Ishan Tankha will discuss his eight-page photo essay documenting Kathmandu’s Gen Z protests.

Charles Emmerson is the editor of Translator and the author of three books. His essays and criticism have appeared in the Los Angeles Review of Books, New Lines, and the Times Literary Supplement. He is currently working on a book retelling European history from the margins and a podcast about exiles as links between British and global histories.

Trà My Hickin is a writer, publisher, archivist and community organiser, and co-editor at Translator. She works in support of social justice and community projects including An Viet Archives and Tilted Axis Press, and is a board member of New Tide Media Network, amplifying ESEA perspectives in western media.

Zanta Nkumane is a writer and journalist from Eswatini, and co-editor at Translator. His work has appeared in the Mail& Guardian, OkayAfrica, The Republic and the New York Times. He is also non-fiction editor at Doek! Literary Magazineand was the 2022/23 UEA Booker Prize Foundation Scholar in Creative Writing.

Sanam Maher is a journalist in Karachi, Pakistan, and a contributing editor at Translator. Her book, A Woman Like Her: The Short Life of Qandeel Baloch, on the murder of Pakistan’s first social media celebrity, was published in 2019, and named one of the best books of the year by The New York Times and The New Yorker.

Ishan Tankha is a photographer based in New Delhi. In his work, he tries to show the extraordinary range of issues that beset a country as large and complex as India, from violent conflict in marginalised states to protests and pogroms in the heart of the national capital to the effects of climate change on remote villages. He is focused on how life is lived in the crosshairs of major events and a fraught national politics.
