R21 aka Restoring Solidarity

R21 aka Restoring Solidarity is a poetic reflection on a collection of twenty 16mm films made from the 1960s to 1980s, and safeguarded in Tokyo by the Japanese solidarity movement with Palestine. The journey starts and ends in a lab, using a film scanner as a time machine, capturing a history of the Palestinian struggle as seen by Japanese audiences. Structured around fragments of an undelivered solidarity letter written by a Japanese activist to a Palestinian filmmaker, this montage essay restores an account of transnational solidarity whilst drawing out the aspirations and struggles of an era.
