Postmuslim

Youssef Rakha with Samia Rahman

Date and Time:

Wed 11 Nov, 6–8pm

Location:
Majlis

Youssef Rakha’s Postmuslim follows the author from his teenage years in Cairo, where he lost his faith, to his arrival in Britain as a young student looking for the freedoms home seemed to withhold. Over three decades, the book traces his growing disenchantment with the politics of both places and asks what might be built from two inheritances held at arm’s length.

To celebrate the publication of Postmuslim, Rakha will be joined by Samia Rahman for a conversation about writing a self that refuses to settle into the idealised, the caricatured, the essentialised. Moving between personal, political, and cultural histories, they will ask what it means to embrace the fullness of a Muslim identity in the twenty-first century. Can a self be made from multiple cultures that inspire as much ambivalence as belonging?

Doors open at 5.30pm; event starts at 6pm and ends at 8pm.
