Each study session is hosted by a guest that brings selected texts from the Otolith Library into dialogue with Eman Abdelhadi and M.E. O'Brien's \u003Ci>Everything for Everyone: An Oral History of the New York Commune, 2052–2072\u003C/i>, and Peter Watkins' \u003Ci>La Commune (Paris, 1871)\u003C/i>.\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0cm;\">Across each event, \u003Ci>Notes from the London Commune\u003C/i> highlights moments from the pre-history of liberation of London. The commune form assigns each person a role in the story of creation: from each according to their ability, to each according to their need.\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0cm;\">This study session and workshop explores various black feminist contributions to communist struggle in the United Kingdom, thinking specifically about how engagement with the cultural production of revolutionary social movements can reanimate our sense of communist ethics in the present. It is not even that hard to understand the workings of the machineries of violence and extraction that wreck so many lives. What is harder is to plot our steps towards the possibility of overthrow. Not the full-on all or nothing conflict to decide who makes history. It is the long run-up to freedom that is so hard to comprehend.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>This session considers the skills, artefacts and archives that might be built in our moment to create the conditions for a pre-history of liberation.\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0cm;\">\u003Cstrong>Sunday 28 June 12–4pm\u003C/strong> led by\u003Cstrong> Abeera Khan\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Cp>To imbue the queer of colour with a ‘gestural’ rather than ‘emulative’ function for critical inquiry, Roderick Ferguson argues, is to summon critical practices that point away from the subject and towards the \"racialized, gendered, classed, and eroticized heterogeneity of the social.\" This session considers the possibility of queer of color critique and politics to \u003Ci>gesture\u003C/i> towards what Kristin Ross has called the commune’s 'non-accumulative social relations'. Thinking in relation with these provocations, together we will consider: What is/has been/will be the object of queer of color politics? How does queer liberalism delimit our political horizons? How does gender configure capital's accumulation strategy?\u003C/p>\u003Cp>We will engage with select texts that confront the interpretive and political horizons of queer critique, newsletters from the Gay Black Group archive, and trans theories of gender abolition to situate the possibility of sex/gender/sexuality through non-accumulative social relations.\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0cm;\">\u003Cstrong>Sunday 26 July 12–4pm\u003C/strong> led by\u003Cstrong> Mataio Austin Dean\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0cm;\">In this workshop, artist, poet, musician and activist Mataio Austin Dean will lead participants using a Benjaminian interleaving of texts and methodologies to explore the complex relationship between London, as an imperial metropole, and Guyana, as a former British colony. This will involve close reading and discussions of, among other topics, Atlantic slavery, ancestral thinking, anti-imperialist poetry, London’s livery companies, chaos magic and Marxism. Participants will create a series of ‘decolonial sigils’\u003Ci> \u003C/i>which function as small points of focus in constellations of anti-imperialist struggle. She is a Lecturer in Gender and Sexuality at SOAS, University of London. \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Mataio Austin Dean\u003C/strong> is an artist, poet, musician and activist. Austin Dean’s practice is often centred around an interrogation of Marxism as a tool for emancipatory praxis. His work is concerned with the relationship between printmaking and orality, with works often consisting of etchings and other printed matter, along with singing, writing, reciting and speaking. \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>James Elsey\u003C/strong> is a writer and activist currently working towards a doctoral project at the London School of Film, Media and Design at the University of West London. Elsey works mostly with text, radio and events to unfurl thinking across the continuum between political urgencies and speculative circuitries.\u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The Otolith Collective \u003C/strong>is a long-standing artist led organisation supporting intergenerational and intragenerational art practices, research-led projects, writing and process-based forms of development. They create environments that nourish discourse and discussion, co-commission artists, and curate exhibitions and programmes with a wide range of collaborators, organisations and institutions here and elsewhere. Theirs is an international project based on transnational and translocal vision who are committed to maintaining and animating an experimental and worldmaking approach. Performing across disciplines such as visual art, performance, new music, film and video, new technology and critical writing, we draw a diverse range of audiences.
