What we hear are genealogies of ideas in sound, musical itineraries that shape the ways in which artists navigate history, politics, memory and relation. \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Contemplative Dialogues\u003C/strong> engage with these genealogies as sites of inquiry. It attends to the ways in which acoustic epistemologies attune contemporary practice. It treats listening as analytic, speculative, and world-making. \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Contemplative Dialogue 3\u003C/strong> turns to the artist Tony Cokes. Since the late 1980s, Tony Cokes has developed an utterly singular audiovisual aesthetic in which texts selected from media theory, cultural studies, music journalism and African American history swipe across supervivid, ultraflat fields of monochrome driven by soundtracks ranging from postpunk and indie to techno and house.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">By divorcing text from images and mismatching fonts with beats, bass and voice, each Tony Cokes video, with their file format titles, brings us face to face with the associative, arbitrary and confounding, logics of sense, meaning and experience. Each video cross-wires the relations between listening, reading looking and watching to enact the ways in which, in his own words ‘music and text operate together to produce thought and affect.’ \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">Upon watching his videos, it soon becomes clear that Cokes is a long-time fan of white British musics of the 1960s onwards. Since the 1980s, his work has surfaced the latent ideologies of popular culture, confronting issues of structural racism, power, visibility, and the defiant pleasures still found under capitalism. Cokes samples and remixes fragments of our media landscape to subvert its governing codes. His tightly choreographed video essays layer found text over vibrant colors and dissonant soundtracks, exploiting the gaps between sensory regimes to heighten and complicate the reading experience. Quoted passages from current events or critical theory take on a new tenor when set to music, resulting in propulsive animations that appeal to the mind and body alike. Cokes’s immersive works make text feel visceral and let rhythm spur new insight: as his art attests, “it is possible to dance and think at the same time.” \u003C/p>\u003Cp>\u003Cstrong>The Otolith Collective \u003C/strong>is a long-standing artist led organisation supporting intergenerational and intragenerational art practices, research-led projects, writing and process-based forms of development. They create environments that nourish discourse and discussion, co-commission artists, and curate exhibitions and programmes with a wide range of collaborators, organisations and institutions here and elsewhere. Theirs is an international project based on transnational and translocal vision who are committed to maintaining and animating an experimental and worldmaking approach. Performing across disciplines such as visual art, performance, new music, film and video, new technology and critical writing, we draw a diverse range of audiences.
