Through reenactments, interviews, and landscape imagery, both directors explore the difficulties of excavating memories of destroyed urban places in Syria. Engaging with different sites and time periods, Amiralay and Chapon investigate the layered interplay between politics and place from distinct positionalities.  \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">In \u003Ci>A Plate of Sardines\u003C/i> (1997), Amiralay revisits the ruins of Quneitra in the Golan Heights in the company of fellow Syrian filmmaker Mohammad Malas, who is native to this city. Against the haunting images of the devastated neighborhoods, which were occupied by Israel and then abandoned following the 1973 war, the director reflects on his only interactions with Quneitra being through Malas’ cinema, as the city no longer exists. Amiralay interrogates how ruins can become stages for reenactments and the resurfacing of memories.\u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">In 2015, the Basateen al-Razi district of Damascus was razed to the ground as punishment for the population’s uprising against Bashar al-Assad’s regime. \u003Ci>Al Basateen \u003C/i>(2025) traces the disappearance of the neighbourhood and its oldest orchards\u003Cu>,\u003C/u> which once stood in Damascus, held by the testimonies of two former residents and the use of 3D animation.   \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">Coinciding with the final weekend of \u003Ca target=\"_blank\" href=\"https://ibraaz.org/whats-on/stolen-past-hrair-sarkissian\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u003Ci>\u003Cu>Stolen Past\u003C/u>\u003C/i>\u003C/a> by \u003Cstrong>Hrair Sarkissian\u003C/strong> at Ibraaz London, connected themes of collective memory and safeguarding against deliberate erasure will be discussed in a conversion with filmmaker Antoine Chapon, moderated by Emma Bouraba. \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Doors open at 2.30pm; event starts at 3pm and finishes at 4.30pm.\u003C/strong>\u003C/p>",[],[103],{"authorName":12,"authorRole":12,"authorPortrait":104,"authorBio":105,"authorUrl":12},[],{"html":106},"\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Omar Amiralay\u003C/strong> (b. 1944 in Damascus, Syria; d. 5 February 2011) is considered one of the leading documentarists in the Arab world. After studying at the Paris film school La fémis, he returned to Syria in 1970, where he made, among others, documentaries about the Tabqa Dam on the Euphrates, the screenings of which were banned because of criticism of the corrupt state apparatus in Syria. Amiralay’s films have received a number of awards worldwide. In 1976, he won the Interfilm Award - Otto Dibelius Film Award at the International Forum of Young Cinema for \u003Ci>Al hayatt al yawmiyah fi quariah suriyah\u003C/i> (Everyday Life in a Syrian Village).  \u003C/p>\u003Cp style=\"margin-left:0px;\">\u003Cstrong>Antoine Chapon \u003C/strong>(b. 1990, France) is a filmmaker and multidisciplinary artist. His work creates hybrid forms using cinema, CGI animation, and archives. His first short film \u003Ci>My Own Landscapes\u003C/i> premiered in Visions du Reel where it won the Best Short Film Award. It was then selected in more than 40 festivals, such as Sundance, Telluride, Palm Springs, Sarajevo and Premiers Plans. His work has been showcased at ZKM|Karlsruhe, Centre Pompidou, the 17th Venice Architecture Biennale, and the Singapore Art Museum.
