Youngsook’s practice proposes ecological grief as a process of climate interrogation, scrutinising structural conditions that intersect human tragedy and environmental loss. Her long-term project In Every Bite of the Emperor (2021–ongoing) explores transnational structures of neocolonial extraction, interlacing the narratives of eco-social declines across post-mining towns in Northern England, the Malaysian rainforest and Orang Asli communities, and the hydrosphere and fishing communities in central Vietnam. In exploring eco-literacy, Youngsook’s research draws on gestures of utterance such as coughing and yawning to create cathartic moments of interspecies healing. With an emphasis on collective reimagination and the urgent need for planetary pedagogy, Youngsook founded the transnational eco-grief council Foreshadowing (2023) and co-founded the practice-based research collective Decolonising Botany (2021). Youngsook’s works have been supported by and presented in various institutions internationally, including: Arts Catalyst, Asia-Art-Activism, Barbican Centre, Camden Arts Centre, Coventry Biennial, Delfina Foundation, Estuary Festival, FACT Liverpool, Heart of Glass, Liverpool Biennial, and Tate Modern in the UK; documenta 15 and Kunsthalle am Hamburger Platz in Germany; ARKO Art Center, Busan Biennale, Leeum Museum, Seoul Media City Biennale, and Seoul Museum of Art in South Korea; Singapore National Gallery; Á Space and AirHue in Vietnam.

All That Burnt All That Glow
",[229
[],[232,236
"content

All That Burnt All That Glow (2025) is a poetic video essay by Youngsook Choi, which is primarily composed of video documentation of Youngsook’s site-specific performance of the same title. Commissioned by the Busan Biennale 2024 and Brent Biennial 2025, All That Burnt All That Glow commemorates ecological loss by organising a healing ritual for the Brent Reservoir. The reservoir was originally built to supply water to the Grand Union Canal when it served as a vital route to transport coal mined in Northern England to the South and the capital. Now surrounded by green paths, the reservoir is home to sailing communities. Sailing, as a means of water navigation, is intimately entangled with colonial expeditions and conquests. The diverse cultural heritage of the Brent population emanated from this history. All That Burnt All That Glow excavates these histories and legacies by engaging sailors in a water-bound performance on the trembling, swelling, and scarred hydroscape of the Brent Reservoir. In the performance we see and hear the pain of geological wounds and labouring bodies, mourning voices calling for remembrance and healing, and smoke bombs that serve as a warning of our current climate emergency. Curated by Annie Jael Kwan, All That Burnt All That Glow was performed with sailors from the Wembley Sailing Club in coordination with Tom Dalrymple.
